St Joseph’s House for Adult Deaf and Deafblind

St Joseph’s House is a unique residential community for Deaf and DeafBlind adults, the only one of it’s kind in Ireland. The vision for people who reside in St Joseph’s house is to live an inclusive life with equal opportunities empowering each person to shape and direct their future.

St Joseph’s House is located in an historically listed building and grounds in Stillorgan, South County Dublin. The people living in St Joseph’s House come from all over Ireland and further afield in some cases and enjoy a full and active community life supported by a range of professional staff, trained in Irish Sign Language.

St Joseph’s House is in the midst of exciting change. In line with the HSE Time to Move On policy people from St Joseph’s House will over the next few years move into the community with a wrap-around support service suited to each individual’s needs. We believe that this change will support people to have a better quality of life and will provide the opportunity for people to live self-directed lives.

The vision for St Joseph’s House has been agreed and a number of recruitment drives have taken place to ensure the project to move people into the community is fully resourced up. Training is key to this and although a number of staff training events have taken place, more are scheduled to ensure the community model we move to is fit for purpose. We are now part of an established network of organisations who have and are successfully in the process of de-congregating.

Following our HIQA Audit in September 2017 we registered in February 2018 which will see us through for three years. We were delighted with the support from the people living in St Joseph’s House, staff˛and family members that contributed to the success of the HIQA audit. 2018 will see up to nine people commence Discovery and we are working hard to ensure the process is led by the people that live in St Joseph’s House. CIDP are fully committed to supporting the people living in St Joseph’s House, staff, and family members through the transition process.
